Tasting Heaven in Angel’s Kitchen
Reposted from MySummerSolstice

Saturday night was just so rainy that my date L and I had to brave the floods ( the car, at least ), get all soaked in rainwater ( which, I might say, strangely pains my muscles ), to be able to find a place to grab dinner and chitchat. I left L to decide where he wanted to have dinner, and when we were in the Greenhills area, he asked me, “Would you like to try Angel’s Kitchen?” I immediately said sure since I think I’ve heard of it before, but I’ve just never had the chance to try it there.
Angel’s Kitchen happened to be on the same strip as Conti’s and BeloMed, it’s a quiet place at night, a little bit isolated and away from the very much alive Promenade and Greenhills Shopping Center.
As I went in the resto, I was greeted with elegant incandescent lightings with matching elegant wooden interiors. I immediately fell in love with the way things were presented - a beautiful rose in a vase in the middle of a table, and the intricately molded bottle for serving water laid my nerves to rest and made me feel ahh, this is a Saturday night after all, and I can stop thinking about work!

The welcome munch-me’s were melba toast and chicken pate with pistachio. It wasn’t too salty as I’ve expected it to be, and it wasn’t too strong. It was just right.
As L and I flipped through the menu, I was stunned with their unique selections. I skipped the thought of pasta although their Longganisa Bolognese seemed enticing ( I wasn’t seeking for sweet food that night since my sweets overload in the afternoon ). I thought of getting Lamb Curry, but when my eye caught the words “low cholesterol,” I was immediately settled for Ostrich Salpicao.

My Ostrich Salpicao was very very very very very very (to the nth power) delicious. It tasted very much like beef tenderloin chunks but it was more tender. I never thought it’d taste or be in texture just like beef because I anticipated it to be just like well, chicken! Sauteed in so much green chili’s and garlic , I enjoyed its spicyness and being so full of flavor as I ate it with my bowl of white rice.

L’s dish was Pinakbet Paella with Lechon Kawali. The serving was pretty hefty as it could be for two already - rice overload, indeed! I was given a chance to nick a bit of L’s lechon kawali and it was very flaky and fried just fine. The rice, I could not really tell because I don’t eat pinakbet, but it had flavors of vegetables and some tasty soup stock. But really, how are you going to eat pinakbet if there isn’t any bagoong ( shrimp paste ) ?

Now, here’s where I can point out where the dish turns really really special- their bagoong ( shrimp paste ). Take a look at the picture. See the brown thing in the middle? It’s actually chocolate. Yep - their bagoong is mixed with chocolate. I was able to try it and it actually balance the bagoong’s seafood taste with some innocent sweetness. It was quite a new experience for me to taste something like that and I think it’s a great combo, anyway.

My drink for the night was the only fruit drink I’d ever settle for - the very refreshing dalandan juice. Angel’s Kitchen’s dalandan juice was pretty rich - it wasn’t too diluted with water so I appreciated the refreshing drink as I felt that I was drinking from the fruit itself. I am currently sighing. And it arrived to me all bubbled up. Sigh.
Overall, our dinner was very very delicious, and with the simple, but beautiful ambience, I’d say it’s a perfect date place, as well as place for families and friends to grab some exquisite, and unique food selections. Thanks to L for sharing with me one of his “secret places,” as so he claims!
