My Ultimate UNO Experience

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

It was another Saturday night, and most Saturday nights are spent with me and my best buds doing something together. One thing that I enjoy most doing with them, is well, checking out and hunting for good restos. My best buds , three of them, have discriminating tastebuds, and I could not ask for more with recommendations as I never go wrong with them! But for this Saturday night, it was my sis C, our resident chef, who gave me a nice reco - UNO at Tomas Morato.

C had her dining experience with her friends there roughly 2 months ago, and she was craving for the very fragrant barramundi fish ( honestly, I haven’t heard of that before! ). She told me it was relatively affordable, and UNO changes its menu twice a month, so I made reservations for three ( one of us couldn’t come ) for Saturday night.

UNO is located in a small street adjacent to Tomas Morato. It’s right across the new Amici ( which was once before my favorite CPK resto, sniff ). Parking was pretty difficult because it was a side street and so many cars were parked, and I’m guessing they were eating at Amici because from my view, Amici was soo packed for the night! Going back, M and I entered UNO, and it was a small restaurant, with two floors. We were given the menu, and with our current state of hunger, we ordered a salad immediately, while waiting for J.

To start with, we were served the house bread. Warm, and soft. Served with butter.

here’s to REAL iced tea! haha!

I also got their homebrewed iced tea, and I’m so glad that it tasted halfway like iced tea! I easily get scared when I read “homebrewed” lately because I had this experience of ordering iced tea in upscale resto’s that don’t even taste like iced tea, but some fragrant tea! This is bottomless for 60 php. Good enough, right? I was also so impressed that the serving lady made me try the iced tea before I ordered to make sure that it tasted good!

When J arrived, she was also hungry as well and immediately, we ordered our food! Turns out that the pasta, salads, chicken, and pork dishes were priced affordably at around a bit above 200 pesos, but the beef and fish were a bit expensive, with fish at around 400+ and beef, at around 1000+. But well, we were ultimate beef lovers, so we caved in and ordered a pasta dish, and a beef dish.

Our salad came in shortly, Barbequed Shrimp Okra Salad with Romaine and Creole Dressing . What’s a creole dressing? I really don’t know, but from our tastebuds’ respective memories, all three of us agreed that it tasted like thousand island dressing mixed with ceasar dressing! The romaine lettuce were really crunchy, and it was my first time to ever taste an okra, because I don’t eat okra! It tasted pretty tasteless ( hahaha what? ) but I felt something slimy on my mouth so J and I left M to finish all the okra’s! Haha! The shrimp was good, the cheese added to the creamy tasting dressing, and overall, we found the salad very comforting. Like something you’d munch while watching a home movie - something that you don’t get tired of eating. Even J who hates salads loved it!

Next up was the pasta dish, Fresh Broad Spinach Ribbons with toasted UNO-made Chorizo Sausage. The ground bits you see on the photo are ground chorizo sausage, that add to the flavor ( salty flavorful ) to the pasta. I was asking J if it was supposed to be like that - the pasta being sticky, and she said it might have been the “style”. It tasted good, but we felt that it needed more sauce. The pasta itself wasn’t dry, being well done, but it would be better if there were more sauce. Haha!

Okay, tantananan! Our favorite. Flame Grilled US Porterhouse Steak With Fresh Mushroom Salpicao. The dish was a bit above one thousand bucks, and despite the dreaded price, it was very very much worth it. The steak was big, at 330g, and it tasted SO GOOD! The steak was cooked medium well, just the way we liked it, and it was tender and very flavorful on its own! For more flavor, or achieving that “mushroom salpicao” taste, there are mushrooms on the dish that you can eat together with your steak that gives a boost of flavor. Very very nice. A superlative thumbs up from moi!

After a very very filling dinner, we decided to have dessert. J’s sister ( apparently, our sisters have dined there already! ) says that the cheesecake was great there. And indeed it was. It was like “mamon” cheesecake, because it somewhat tasted like mamon, an cheesecake combined! Very delightful.

To sum it up, we loved our dining experience at UNO. Mega thanks to my sister C for recommending it to us, I think I didn’t disappoint my friends with her reco! I myself went home all filled up! I’d want to dine here again, maybe when I’m craving for very good steak , because believe me, their steak is SO GOOD! I’d recommend this as a nice date place if your date is a very keen with food - you won’t go wrong! It’s also a great place for intimate dinner with good friends, like I enjoyed my dining experience there with J and M!
