Singaporean Yummy Adventures : Exploring Chinatown

Chinatown, Singapore!

It was another Friday night, and what better way to finish the work-week and study-week off than eating good food with great company! This time, we decided to check out Chinatown, here in Singapore. Very much fascinated and excited, I think I was the first to arrive in the meeting place leaving extra early, anticipating good Chinese food, which happens to be my favorite cuisine of all time. I could really get fat just eating and eating Chinese food without any guilt.

The Chinatown in Singapore has a very modern feel without much shedding off its very traditional and rich Chinese culture. Stepping out of the MRT Station in Chinatown, I was immediately greeted with a shopping haven of everything , from Chinese antiques, medicine, food/deli, and so much more! It had a very festive atmosphere since Chinese New Year was coming up in a week’s time, and it dawned upon me how the Singaporeans regard this as one of the most important occasions of the year since they don’t really celebrate Christmas, and prepare even more for Chinese/Lunar New Year.

the very interesting wall of dried Chinese food. Love it! All in red, huh!

What I had for the night? Very, very good food, still. I think I am going to gain weight here in Singapore. The food is very good, specially those in places like these. The outdoor “foodcourt” made us easy to order in various stalls and resto’s there, and here’s what we got for Friday night dinner :

The satay is very good ( half of the order was chicken, and half was pork ), and dipping it in the peanut sauce, which was spicy, was actually good! It was actually the first time I braved myself to dip the satay in peanut sauce since I wasn’t a big fan of peanut sauce. Turns out, it wasn’t too peanut-ty ( how redundant I sound right now! ), so for my next satay orders, I’m dipping, dipping! Hahaha!

I’m slowly learning to eat vegetables, because well, for one, it’s healthy, and I need to watch out for my health! Doesn’t hurt that the garlic kangkong I tried was really, really good!

This dish is called “Lala” here in Singapore. It’s clams sauteed in spicy sauce. I love the clams, and the sauce was just very spicy. I am getting used to spicy food here, good thing that I have affinity with spicy food. Ahh, hot!

One of the specialties, Fried Squid, looks like it’s been added some soy sauce prior to deep frying, no flour, for sure. The crunchy factor was very different from the usual calamares or flour-batter deep fried squid that I always eat. More on the feel of cracking eggshell? Haha ! One bite, you’d definitely hear the crunchy sound because this is sooo crunchy! Flavorful good, as well.

Oh, and last but not the least, did I tell you about my new, favorite fish, of all time? Say STINGRAY! This dish is stingray with a layer full of spices on top of it. The fish is just cooked just right ( I’m guessing grilled ), very tender meat, and the spices really, really make this dish a total winner. Very spicy fish steak, in my opinion. More on the perfect fish steak ever cooked for me! Woot!

Ended the night making new friends, reuniting with very good ones, and with tummies so full, contented, and wanting for more!

I had the squid at the hawker center outside the Esplanade and liked it A LOT. Too bad, I had it on my last night there. MUST GO BACK! As for the stingray, I didn’t like it as much because I don’t really go for spicy food.
