Yummy Singaporean Adventures : Baked Rice at Bencoolen Street

After a tiring day of walking around the city, and conquering six floors of the Funan Digilife Mall, I was ready to go home, and as I met my flatmate Dee there, she promised a good, comfort food that would definitely be worth a ten minute walk despite my tired, worn out muscles. She promised to let me try one of her favorite dishes - Baked Rice.
After walking around, which is not really my thing because I have just started exploring the city and all I frequent are places that are nearby the MRT station for safe access, we finally reached Bencoolen Street, and across the Hotel Bencoolen, we went in a “hawker” place with no name, but I saw this certain sign called M11@Bencoolen. That must be it?

Dee went over the Western Food corner while I sat down, while she ordered one baked rice, for us to share. After over 15 minutes of waiting, my stomach was growling and I was growing impatient.
But then, I could definitely say that the wait was very well worth it. Look what yummy goodness greeted me :

It’s Baked Rice, in cream and chicken-chop toppings. It’s also smothered in mozzarella cheese. As I sink in my fork in the dish, I could feel the steam getting out as hot, creamy rice is revealed. My my, this was definitely an interesting dinner.
The chicken-chop, very much fused with the mozzarella cheese baked on top, earns my thumbs up for its crispiness and very tasty batter. Very much like super yummy chicken fillet deep fried in very good batter. The rice, is very very creamy, and while eating it hot, it’s the perfect comfort food to eat when you’re down, tired from work, or just seeking for something really filling not only to the tummy, but also the soul.

Rice is just so filling that we didn’t finish the dish even if Dee and I shared one order only. For 5 sgd, it was very much worth the price already! Other variants that can be ordered include changing the creamy sauce to red sauce, and the rice, to pasta. My two friends Dee and Haze still think that Baked Rice, with chicken-chop toppings and cream sauce is the best combination, though.
I love it that they were able to fuse together the western idea of pasta ( for the cheese, and the chicken ) to the Asian staple, rice. I’m very impressed!
I’d definitely allow myself to get lost in the city just to try this wonderful dish again!

There’s something like this in the Philippines, the appetizer in Capricciosa, a Japanese-Italian restaurant in Greenhills and in Greenbelt

I know exactly where this having stayed at the Bayview Hotel twice. Now regretting that we never gave the place a try, opting instead for the Kopitiam on the other side of the hotel. Maybe next time.
